What is a laptop?

A laptop is known for its portability. It is actually a personal computer which was designed to be small and light enough to sit on a person’s lap while being used. On this single unit, it integrates the standard components of a desktop computer, which are the display, keyboard, a pointing device, a touchpad, speakers, and battery. It uses a rechargeable battery which is charged from an AC adapter. This battery usually stores energy enough to run the laptop for two to three hours, depending on the configuration and power management of the computer.
Primarily laptops can be classified by purpose or by features. Some are called as Desktop Replacements because it has most of the capabilities of a desktop computer. This type has a similar level of performance with a desktop computer but usually larger and heavier than a standard laptop. We also have Standard Laptop which balances portability and features of a 13 t o 15 inches screen, optical drives, hard drives, memory and internal expansion cards. Some laptops which do not have battery are called Desknotes which can only be used when plugged in. Another type is a Netbooks. As the name suggests, these are light-weight laptops which are energy-efficient specially suited for wireless communication and Internet access. These are primarily designed for web browsing and e-mailing. We also have a much expensive laptop which is designed for harsh usage conditions, we call it Rugged Laptop. The design found in a rugged laptop includes rubber sheeting under the keyboard keys. It also has sealed port and connector covers in addition to a passive cooling system. It has bright displays for readability in daylight, and cases made of magnesium alloys which are much stronger than plastic used in commercial laptops. The hard disc drives of a rugged laptop are shock mounted to withstand strong vibrations and extreme temperatures. These types of laptops are specially used by military, engineers on construction or mining environment, field service technicians, fire and medical emergency services. These are rarely sold to individuals.
These are the major manufacturers and their brands of laptop. Apple distributes MacBook, Pro, and Air. Acer markets TravelMate, Extensa, and Aspire. Asus have Asus Eee, and Lamborghini. Dell manufactures Inspiron, Latitude, Vostro, and XPS. Hewlett-Packard has HP Pavilion, HP Probook, and Compaq Presario. Panasonic have Toughbook, and Satellite. Sony creates Vaio.
